Model for flexlible European Pathway

The European Pathway model allows the student to build up versatile and flexible European study routes. The model makes it possible for the student to have all his/ her studies that are linked with internationalization validated and recognized and thus to be a part of his/her studies. Vocational colleges and institutions can use the model in many ways. The model gives the student a possibility for internationalization and, at the same time, the resources allocated for international activities are used efficiently and flexibly within the framework of the students´ studies. The student can choose to do the entire study path or only parts of it, according to his or her own individual plan. The studies are nondependent of time or place.

Examples of the use of the model

  1. Preplanned internationalization path in which part of the study modules have been set in advance. Some of the courses are done as pure online studies in Finland before the placement abroad, i.e. online language and culture courses 1-2 cr. Another part is completed while abroad by participating in everyday life and activities and using the foreign language. The student makes observations and reflects on the new cultural environment. The informal learning assignments support the reflection process.

  2. Flexible internationalization path, adding up during the studies. The total scope of internationalization studies has not been selected at the beginning stage of studies or the student has not had the possibility to complete the agreed courses before the placement abroad. While in the destination country, the student makes observations and reflects on the new cultural environment. The informal learning assignments support the reflection process.

The language skills and cultural knowlwdge acquired during the placement abroad support each other and can through validation and recognition form a total of 1-3 credit weeks of studies. By using the method of informal learning and by using the language of the destination country or the English language the student can bring complementary studies into his/her compulsory languages, optional languages or optional module of cultural knowledge, professional language modules i.e. English or French and into the free choice studies of culture or languages.

The model can be used in different ways and it does not have to be completed in full.
